Moreno in the mix of joining Toronto after Jansen injury

Venezuelan catcher Gabriel Moreno is in with a good chance of joining the Toronto Blue Jays in the big leagues after an injury to starting catcher Danny Jansen.

Jansen, who is riding on the heels of a breakout season, suffered a fractured fifth metacarpal on his left hand following the Blue Jays’s 8-0 triumph over the Kansas City Royals on Monday. He had already been sidelined for a significant chunk of the year with a left oblique injury.

With Jansen out, Blue Jays general manager Ross Atkins said that Moreno is now among the names being considered to replace its starting catcher.

“Gabriel has been awesome. He has continued to improve. He’s in a really good spot and he’s very much in the mix for us,” Atkins revealed.

The 22-year old Moreno is the club’s top prospect and fourth overall by MLB pipeline to make his major league debut. He is currently hitting.323 at Triple-A and has thrown out 54% of the runners who have attempted to steal on him.
