Breakaway League in Brazil Takes Step Closer as Club Chiefs Meet to Discuss Terms

Could Brazil’s Serie A Be Under Threat from Breakaway League?

Key representatives from a number of leading Brazilian clubs have met in Sao Paulo to discuss the creation of a breakaway league from Serie A.

Officials from Santos, Flamengo, Palmeiras, Corinthians and São Paulo were joined by their counterparts from Red Bull Bragantino to thrash out terms, while it’s been suggested that a further 11 first division teams have been in direct contact with the proposed breakaway’s creators.

The investment banking firm XP are thought to be one of the entities driving the new competition forward, and they have been given the backing of La Liga chiefs in overseeing the change. Others, including former Coca-Cola boss Ricardo Fort and commercial licensing outfit Live Mode, are also thought to be part of the breakaway project.

It’s been suggested that the formation of the new tournament could be announced later in May, with those involved keen to operate independently of the restrictions placed upon them by the Brazilian Football Confederation.
