Haunted By Marino, Steelers Draft Pitt’s Kenny Pickett

Steelers Draft QB Kenny Pickett

The Steelers organization has long been haunted by their failure to pick Dan Marino, a local boy and graduate of the University of Pittsburgh, during the star-studded 1983 NFL Draft. Fresh off of winning four Super Bowls in six years, the team opted to stick with an aging Terry Bradshaw. Bradshaw lasted just one more season for the Steelers, Marino launched a hall of fame career during which he revolutionized the quarterback position, and Pittsburgh went over 20 years without winning another Super Bowl.

With a history like that, it’s no surprise that the Steelers picked Pitt quarterback Kenny Pickett in the first round of the 2022 NFL Draft. Pickett is coming off a historic 2021 campaign in which he broke many of Marino’s Pitt passing records and earned a nod as a Heisman finalist.

Pickett will compete with veterans Mitchell Trubisky and Mason Rudolph for the Steelers’ starting quarterback job.
