Mets ace Jacob deGrom receives third MRI imaging for shoulder injury

Jacob deGrom of the New York Mets received his third MRI on Monday for the stress reaction on his right scapula that was first discovered on April 1. He is expected to be out from playing until the second week of June.

“When you start talking about bone, it’s a little different than muscle tendons,” said pitching coach Jeremy Hefner on Monday.

“You don’t want to mess around with bone, especially with a stress reaction in bones. We don’t want to mess around with reinjuring that type of situation, because then he’s done for the year. So we’re definitely going to play the long game with him to make sure that we have him for the rest of the season.”

His shoulder injury was found out on April 1, when he received his first MRI on the injury. The 33-year-old starting pitcher was listed on the 60-day injured list on April 7. He took second imaging on April 25, which showed “considerable healing”.

DeGrom started throwing flat ground in Florida with a max distance of 75 feet. His doctor has forbidden him from undergoing a bullpen session if his test result still requires him to rest. DeGrom is expected to rebuild his endurance if his result comes clean.

“Obviously, we want him back as soon as possible,” said Hefner. “But you’ve got to really make sure that he’s built up properly, and everyone feels good, he feels good.

“We need to make sure that not only are we doing what’s best for the Mets, trying to win the World Series this year, but also what’s best for the player.”

DeGrom’s replacement’s replacement

Tylor Megill was placed to replace deGrom immediately. However, his performance was rather lacking, with a record of 4-2 and a 4.41 ERA in seven outings.

Megill then was benched for 15 days and listed on the injury list after sustaining right bicep tendinitis as discovered on Sunday.

“I was worried just because I’ve never had discomfort,” said Megill. “I know what soreness feels like, but this wasn’t that. Obviously, I was a little freaked out about it, but the results came back really well. So it’s not too bad. I’m not worried.”

Several players are expected to replace Megill. David Peterson is one choice, but he is currently not on a turn for the rotation. Trevor Williams is more likely to replace as a pitcher.
