Are São Paulo Set to Wave Goodbye to Wonderkid Marquinhos?

Marquinhos Could Leave São Paulo In 2022

Despite not yet being a first-team regular at São Paulo, Marquinhos could be the subject of a bidding war in the European transfer window with two English Premier League clubs interested in his services.

The 19-year-old has reportedly been watched by scouts from Arsenal and Wolverhampton Wanderers, although they may have left Cícero Pompeu de Toledo Stadium disappointed – the versatile forward has only played 28 minutes of action so far this term.

But they must have seen enough in the young talent to be interested, and now the question is whether or not they will meet the €50 million – that’s around $52 million – release clause in his contract.

For clubs like Sao Paulo, cashing in on their most saleable young assets has been key to their business in recent years. Since the start of 2017, they have made a whopping $151 million in transfer fees – the likes of Antony, Brenner, Lucas Pratto and Luiz Araújo all moving to pastures new for eight-figure sums.
