Atlas secure Liga MX Clausura Final Place Courtesy of 100th Minute Penalty

Atlas Progress to Liga MX Clausura Final After Madcap SF

An astonishing second-half performance from UNAL Tigres was not enough for them to overcome Atlas in their Liga MX Clausura semi-final.

Los Tigres rattled in four goals in the space of 27 second minutes – including a hat-trick from André-Pierre Gignac – as they sought to overturn a 0-3 deficit from the first leg.

Atlas had already taken the lead on the night at the Estadio Universitario thanks to a first-half goal from Julián Quiñones, but Tigres’ second-half dominance left the tie perfectly poised at 4-4 on aggregate with ten minutes of normal time left to play.

But there would be one final twist in the tale, as Los Rojinegros were awarded a penalty a full ten minutes into injury time after Jesús Angulo brought down Diego Barbosa. Atlas turned to their captain, Aldo Rocha, and he made no mistake from the spot to conclude the most amazing of games.

Atlas will now take their place in the Clausura final against Pachuca, with the first leg to be played at Estadio Jalisco on Thursday.
