Boca’s home draw with Godoy Cruz leaves Battaglia on thin ice

Coach Battaglia under pressure

Pressure has begun to mount on Boca Junior coach Sebastián Battaglia after a disappointing home draw against Godoy Cruz.

Since beating arch rivals River Plate in the latest edition of the Argentine Derby, the “Superclásico”, Boca have had four consecutive draws in the league. This has led to the club’s vice president, Juan Román Riquelme, giving Battaglia an ultimatum to continue in his role.

Despite still sitting in the qualifying positions for the league playoffs, the team’s performances have drawn strong criticism from the fans and has started to highlight the coach’s lack of experience.

Riquelme has spoken with Battaglia about his future at the club. The agreement they would have reached is that Boca must win their next 2 matches, first against Central Córdoba and then against Brazilian side Corinthians in the Copa Libertadores.

Battaglia’s situation has not been helped by the large number of injuries that the team has, meaning players are being played out of position. It remains to be seen whether he can turn round the club’s fortunes.
