Preview: While Liverpool are making their bow in the pre-season tournament tonight, it will be a second game for the Greek side who contested the curtain-raiser against AC Milan in Toronto. Olympiakos are opponents who evoke fond memories for Liverpool supporters, mainly from the famous Champions League clash in December 2004 when the Merseyside club were four minutes from bowing out of a competition they went on to win. Needing a two-goal victory to advance from the group stage, Liverpool were 1-0 down at half time to a Rivaldo goal but had gone 2-1 up when Steven Gerrard hit a stunning late clincher, prompting the famous “You beauty” cry from Andy Gray during the Sky Sports commentary. Of course, Liverpool went on to achieve an even more famous comeback against AC Milan in the Istanbul final as they captured the European Cup for the fifth time. But the catalyst was the turnaround against Olympiakos, so no wonder Gerrard selected the Greek champions as the opposition for his testimonial game last summer. Gerrard and fellow England World Cup players Daniel Sturridge, Glen Johnson, Jordan Henderson and Raheem Sterling are expected to be available for this game after missing the warm-up friendly match against Roma in Boston on Wednesday.

However, Rickie Lambert, like Adam Lallana – who is facing six weeks on the sideslines – a signing from Southampton this summer, has made an earlier start to joining in the action for his new club and put in his first appearance against Preston North End last weekend before the squad flew to the United States. Another exciting development for Liverpool fans is the integration of £20million signing Lazar Markovic, while another winger, Jordon Ibe, has shown signs that he could be capable of making a Raheem Sterling-type impact. As for Olympiakos, they again proved themselves easily the best team in Greece last season as they won their country’s Super League by 17 points and reached the last 16 of the Champions League before bowing out against Manchester United despite winning the first leg 2-0 at home. New arrivals at the club include French defender Eric Abidal, former Fulham winger Pajtim Kasami and Swedish wide man Jimmy Durmaz.
