Emelec In Seventh Heaven After Reaching Copa Libertadores Quarter-Finals

Emelec’s Magnificent Seven Secures Passage to Copa Libertadores QF

Needing to win handsomely and hope that Deportivo Táchira lost at Palmeiras if they were to qualify for the quarter-finals of Copa Libertadores, Emelec wasted no time in holding up their end of the bargain against Independiente Petrolero.

The Liga PRO Ecuador side opened the scoring after just 16 minutes at Estadio George Capwell courtesy of Alejandro Cabeza, and the forward would double his team’s tally at the 35th minute mark.

Their Bolivian opponents were looking dangerous on the counterattack, but Emelec continued to push for goals and managed to find two more before half-time – Sebastián Rodríguez and José Cevallos converting assists from Dixon Arroyo and Eddie Guevara respectively.

Independiente made three changes at the break, but it did little to stem the tide as further goals from Joao Rojas, Mauro Quiroga and a second of the night for Rodríguez completed a tremendous 7-0 win for the hosts.

As news filtered through that Deportivo Táchira had been trounced 1-4 in Brazil, it kept alive Emelec’s hopes of finally reaching a first Copa Libertadores final in 62 years.
