Familiar foes await Uruguay in World Cup

Uruguay learn World Cup opponents

Uruguay finished third in South American World Cup qualification and as a reward found themselves drawn into Group H for the finals.

Each Group within the draw has a great level of intrigue but Group H on paper is arguably the toughest. To advance out of the group Uruguay will need to navigate their way past Portugal, Ghana, and South Korea.

It’s the match against Ghana that has caught the attention of the public and it looks to be one of the matches of the Group phase.

The two memorably played out a dramatic quarterfinal back in 2010. Ghana was denied a winning goal thanks to Luis Suarez handling the ball on the goal line. Despite being sent off, Ghana would miss the subsequent penalty and go onto lose the match. If Ghana had won they would have become the first side from Africa to reach the semi-finals of a World Cup.

Portugal and South Korea are two talented teams with some standout players. Any two of the four teams have a real chance of progression.

If Uruguay were to navigate themselves through the group their task doesn’t get any easier. With Brazil in Group G, the team that finishes second knows that they could have to face the Brazilians in the last 16.
