Liverpool beat Villarreal in the first leg of the Champions League semifinal

Liverpool beat Villarreal 2-0

Liverpool moved a step closer to a historic quadruple with a 2-0 victory over Villarreal in the first leg of their Champions League semifinal.

Played in front of a boisterous Anfield crowd, Liverpool were the heavy favorites to take a lead into the second leg and it was a match they dominated from start to finish.

For the South Americans on the pitch, it was a quiet night all around.

For Liverpool Luis Diaz was his busy, industrious self but was unable to find the back of the net or provide an assist. Fabinho had an easy time of things with Villarreal mostly being restricted to their own half. Alisson could have read a book as Villareal failed to produce a shot on target all night.

The three South Americans on the Villarreal side were a lot busier! Goalkeeper Geronimo Ruilli was forced into a string of saves and was left hapless for both goals he conceded. Juan Foyth showed glimpses of what a good player he is but failed to make any significant impact. Giovanni Lo Celso was rarely seen moving the ball forward, instead of having to help his defense keep the swathes of Liverpool attacks at bay.

The tie is by no means over, but much more will be needed and expected of Villarreal’s South American trio when these sides meet again.
