Liverpool Fc To Step Up Interest In Adam Johnson

Liverpool are ready to step up their interest in Adam Johnson, who looks set to leave Manchester City this month.

Johnson has admitted that he is prepared to leave the Etihad Stadium this summer should his international chances be hampered by a lack of first-team football, and as reported by Crunchsports.com last month, there is still interest from Anfield following the appointment of Brendan Rodgers as manager.

Liverpool’s interest in the former Middlesbrough midfielder dates back to last year when Kenny Dalglish was in charge of the club, and although the Reds are understood to have made enquiries for the 25-year-old in recent days, they face competition from several other clubs.

Everton and Sunderland are keen on Johnson, while according to BBC Sport, new Tottenham manager Andre Villas-Boas is also interested in signing the winger.

Manchester City manager Roberto Mancini at the weekend confirmed that Johnson could be on the move before the transfer window closes next week.

“Adam wants to go to play. We are waiting for the next ten days to find a solution for him,” the Italian said.

“If we find a good solution Adam can go to play. I think this is better because he is young, he’s a good guy and he deserves to play always and here it is not possible.

“We’ll wait ten days. If after ten days we don’t find a solution for him he’ll stay here. He’s happy and maybe he can have more chances.”

He added: “He can have a future here but you have to understand when you are 25-years-old you want to play always.

“If he decides he wants to play always I agree with him and if he wants to leave I am sorry because I think he is a good guy and is different player from the other striker and wingers, but I understand he wants to play.”

At time of writing, bookmakers Bet Victor make Sunderland narrow favourites to win the race to sign Johnson, ahead of Liverpool and Spurs.
