Pumas UNAM Suffer Heartbreak in Concacaf Champions League Final

Pumas UNAM Taste Defeat in CCL Final

Liga MX team Pumas UNAM were on the wrong side of history as they went down 3-0 to Seattle Sounders on Wednesday evening – 5-2 on aggregate – in the final of the Concacaf Champions League.

It was the first time in 23 years that a team from North America had won the competition, with the Sounders’ victory in front of a record crowd of 68,741 powered by a brace of goals from Peruvian striker Raul Ruidiaz.

The Uruguayan playmaker Nicolas Lodeiro added the third for the MLS outfit, condemning Pumas to defeat. It’s now 33 years since UNAM enjoyed success in a Concacaf competition, and ends the monopoly of Mexican teams on the Champions League trophy that dates back more than a decade.

The contest could have gone much differently had Washington Corozo not blazed over when well placed after 32 minutes, while Diogo de Oliveira also missed a decent chance as the Pumas failed to make their occasional dominance count.
