Rodrygo the hero as Real stuns City

Rodrygo the hero as Real stuns City

Brazilian forward Rodrygo ensured he will always have a place in Real Madrid folklore after he scored two goals in injury time as Real mounted a stunning comeback to leave Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City side reeling.

Heading into the second leg of their Champions League semifinal at the Bernabeu, trailing 3-4, Real knew that they needed to score first to restore parity in the tie.

In a game of few chances, it was City who broke the deadlock courtesy of a superb Riyadh Mahrez strike. Trailing 3-5 Real couldn’t find a way to fashion any real significant chances.

In the first minute of stoppage time Rodrygo, who could count himself unlucky not to have started, latched onto a cross to offer Real a glimmer of hope. The match then turned on its head when just a minute later the Brazilian powered home a header to level the game up at 5-5.

Heading into extra time with the wind in their sails, Real then won a penalty which Karim Benzema made no mistake in converting.

Leading 6-5, Madrid showed all of their experience and saw out the game with relative ease.

Madrid who have now knocked out PSG, Chelsea, and City now face a rerun of the 2018 final against Liverpool which they won 3-1. They will be hoping for a similar result once again.
