Tigre Spring Causes Upset By Dumping River Plate Out of Copa de la Liga Profesional

River Plate Humbled In Copa de la Liga Profesional

Tigre caused a huge upset in the Copa de la Liga Profesional quarter-finals by knocking one of the pre-tournament favourites, River Plate, out of the competition.

The underdogs travelled to Estadio Antonio Vespucio Liberti and were on the front foot from the word go, with Mateo Retegui handing Tigre an early fifth-minute lead courtesy of an assist from Cristian Zabala.

El Matador were living up to their name, but River Plate were handed a way back into the contest in the 58th minute when Enzo Fernandez equalised after good work from Nicolas De La Cruz.

The hosts would dominate possession and the balance of play – Marcelo Gallardo’s men enjoying 69 dangerous attacks to Tigre’s 15 in the second period, but the visitors produced the perfect counter-attacking sucker punch when Facundo Colidio put them back in front after 67 minutes.

They would hang on to their lead until the final whistle, booking their spot in the semi-finals against Argentinos Juniors.
