MMA legend Machida unsure on future after Bellator 281

Machida undecided as free agency looms

Brazilian MMA legend Lyoto Machida has yet to plan his next move with his current contract ending this Friday when he takes on Fabian Edwards at Bellator 281 in London.

In an interview with MMA Fighting’s Guilherme Cruz, the 43-year-old Machida, who will turn a year older this month, said he is still undecided on his future, reiterating that his only focus is completing his Bellator contract.

A veteran of 37 MMA fights, Machida has scored notable victories over MMA champions Vitor Belfort, Randy Couture, Mauricio Rua, Tito Ortiz, and Rich Franklin.

“I wanted to do this last fight of my contract, and I don’t know how things will be from here on if I will have more opportunities in Bellator or in other promotions,” Machida said.

Machida, who has been a shell of his usual self going 2-3 (win-loss) in his last five promotional appearances, said that he has yet to consider retirement, saying he still has a lot of fight left in him.

“I like to fight MMA. I like it a lot, and I feel young to compete. It’s hard to say this could be my last fight,” the soft-spoken Brazilian added.
