Two Canadian pairs will be on action today in the women’s semifinal of the FIVB Porec Major.
amie Lynn Broder and Kristina Valjas and Heather Bansley and Sarah Pavan posted two wins yesterday to reach the medal round of the first Major event of the season.
17th seeds Broder/Valjas beat Spaniards Elsa Baquerizo and Liliana Fernandez 21-16 21-19 in Round 2 before eliminating third seeds Agatha Bednarczuk and Barbara Seixas of Brazil 21-18 21-12. This is the Canadian duo’s third semifinal appearance this season after topping the Fuzhou Open and bagging the bronze in the Lucerne Open.
Broder/Valjas will next play top seeds Talita D-R Antunes and Larissa Franca for a place in the final. The Brazilians, who are aiming for back-to-back titles after topping last week’s Moscow Grand Slam, ousted Finns Taru Lahti and Riikka Lehtonen (23-21 21-15) and Americans Lauren Fendrick and Brooke Sweat (17-21 21-12 15-11).
Bansley/Pavan, meanwhile, will have to get past Australians Louise Bawden and Taliqua Clancy to reach the final. The 18th-seeded Canadians downed Germany’s Chantal Laboureur and Julia Sude 19-21 21-18 15-12 in Round 2 and Italians Marta Menegatti and Viktoria Orsi Toth 20-22 21-19 15-7 in the quarterfinal.
22nd-ranked Bawden/Clancy continued their Cinderella journey by posting wins over Brazilians Carolina Horta and Liliane Maestrini (21-15 21-17) and Lucerne Open champions Karla Borger and Britta Buthe of Germany 21-16 21-17.
The final and bronze medal match will be held later in the day.
Meanwhile, Round 2 and the quarterfinal of the men’s event will take place today.
Second seeds Emanuel Rego and Ricardo Alex Costa of Brazil will face Italians Daniele Lupo and Paolo Nicolai while Americans Jacob Gibb and Casey Patterson will take on reigning world champions Alexander Brouwer and Robert Meeuwsen of the Nethlerlands.
