Volleyball World Beach Pro Tour – Leg Five Doha

South American Dark Horses

So far, both Challenge events in Itapema have featured teams completing unexpectedly long runs and returning home with medals. Is this a trend that will continue in Qatar?

Few imagined that Chilean players Noe Aravena and Vicente Droguett would win silver in Tlaxcala or that the Dutch duo Luini and Penninga would win silver in Itapema. Although seeded 11th and not among the favourites, the Bronze medals at both events were won by the Brazilian women’s teams. We can’t consider these teams as dark horses anymore as they are now certainly on everyone’s radar!

Dark horses are difficult to predict, but looking at the Doha entry lists, there are set to be some strong contenders. One the men’s side, Swiss pair Marco Krattiger and Florian Breer, Austrians Martin Ermacora and Moritz Pristauz are ones to look out for. While on the women’s side, Miki Ishii and Sayaka Mizoe on the Japanese team and Germans Sandra Ittlinger and Isabel Schneider, stand out as strong contenders.
