Carolina GM: Panthers Will Likely Add QB During Draft Weekend

Darnold’s Days Numbered In Carolina

Sam Darnold’s once-promising NFL career appears to have taken another turn for the worst.

ESPN reports that Carolina Panthers general manager Scott Fitterer met with Darnold on Monday, and informed him that “there’s a pretty good chance” the team will acquire another quarterback during draft weekend.

Darnold has struggled since being selected third overall in the 2018 NFL Draft. After three disastrous seasons with the New York Jets, Darnold sought to turn things around with the Carolina Panthers. Sadly, the change in scenery did not put an end to Darnold’s woes. In 12 games with the Panthers last season, he threw for just 9 touchdowns against 13 interceptions, netting a dismal QBR of 33.2.

It’s still uncertain who the Panthers will bring in to replace Darnold. Fitterer has expressed interest in drafting Pitt’s Kenny Pickett or Liberty’s Malik Willis. Pickett is viewed as a potential Week 1 starter in the league, while Willis’ intellect and athleticism may allow him to develop into one of the league’s top quarterbacks. The Panthers may also elect to pursue a more seasoned quarterback through a trade for the 49ers’ Jimmy Garropolo or the Brown’s Baker Mayfield.
