Fernandinho’s future remains unclear

Fernandinho to leave Manchester City

In one of the most bizarre press conferences we have seen in years, Manchester City stalwart Fernandinho dramatically announced on the eve of City’s second leg against Atletico Madrid that he was leaving the club.

Fernandinho who is now 36 has enjoyed nine tremendous seasons at the Etihad but in recent years has only had a bit-part role at the club.

With his contract coming to an end this season Fernandinho has no intention of signing a new one. The problem was that he had failed to tell his manager this! Pep Guardiola found out through the press and was clearly taken aback when he was told.

During his time at the Etihad, Fernandinho has racked up over 250 appearances for the club. Often underrated, he was often the glue that enabled the likes of Kevin De Bruyne and Sergio Aguero to produce their magic.

Fernandinho has already stressed that he would like to finish his career back in Brazil. A host of clubs would be interested in bringing him back but it looks like he wants to return to where it all started and play for Athletico Paranaense.

A deal is some way off and City and Guardiola will still have hopes that they can persuade Fernandinho to stay for one more season.
