Triathlete Jonny Brownlee has been confirmed as a member of the England team for the upcoming Commonwealth Games, which will be held in Birmingham, England, over the summer of 2022. There had been rumors that Brownlee would be stepping back from the triathlon and perhaps focusing on other events, so many fans will be happy to see him back on the team for the Birmingham games.
The 31-year-old athlete brings a wealth of experience to the team, having won a gold medal at the 2020 Olympic Games in Tokyo as well as a silver in Rio in 2016 and a bronze in London in 2012. He is no stranger to success at the Commonwealth Games either, having won two Commonwealth medals in the Glasgow games in 2014 – a gold in the mixed relay and a silver in the individual event. He also took silver in the relay in 2018 in the Gold Coast Commonwealth Games, competing alongside his brother Alistair who is also a two-time Olympic champion.
Brownlee rose to fame as a 16-year-old, winning the 2006 Youth Championships in both triathlon and duathlon, a feat he managed to repeat in 2007 before going on to win bronze medals at the ETU European Junior Triathlon Championships and the ITU World Junior Championships, both in 2008.
Other athletes who will be competing alongside Brownlee as part of the triathlon team for the 2022 Commonwealth Games include Alex Yee and Georgia Taylor-Brown, who were part of the mixed relay team that took gold at the Tokyo Olympics. Sophie Coldwell has also been announced as part of the team.
The Birmingham Commonwealth Games are scheduled to take place between Thursday, July 28 and Monday, August 8, 2022.
