Syed Modi finalists to share prize money after match canceled

The Badminton World Federation (BWF) has declared the Syed Modi India International a ‘No Match.’

The announcement came after it was confirmed that one of the contenders had tested positive for COVID-19.

The statement released by the BWF on Tuesday, January 25 stated that as BWF had confirmed that one of the finalists had tested positive for COVID-19, therefore, the men’s singles final for Syed Modi India International 2022 has been declared a No Match.

The organization also stated that another finalist was ruled to have had close contact with the player who had tested positive.

This player has also been withdrawn and placed in isolation.

BWF has also confirmed the other four finals will go ahead as scheduled.

Cash prize and points to be shared among finalists

The final, which was scheduled for Sunday, January 30, was an all-French affair between Arnaud Merklé and Lucas Claerbout.

Given the unexpected development, the two finalists will now share the spoils of the final cash prize and receive finalist World Ranking points.

According to the BWF, no champion could be determined as both withdrawals were simultaneous.

Indian Shuttler PV Sindhu won the Syed Modi India International in the women’s singles category.

She beat her fellow countrywoman Malvika Bansod in 35 minutes, 21-13, 21-16.

The event took place at the Babu Banarasi Das Indoor Stadium in Lucknow.

It will be her second title at a Super 300 event (she first won the tournament in 2017) and her first BWF title since losing in both the Swiss Open and the BWF World Tour Finals.
