Atlético Nacional suffer surprise defeat at Ríonegro Águilas

League leaders Atlético Nacional lost 1-0 at Ríonegro Águilas but remained on top of Categoría Primera A after their main challengers Deportes Tolima and Millonarios also suffered unexpected defeats.

Deportes Tolima lost at home to Deportivo Pasto and Millonarios were beaten by Deportivo Pereira.

It was a great win for Ríonegro Águilas against the league leaders, that allows the fans of ‘Las Águilas Doradas’ to dream of a miraculous qualification to the playoffs. They are currently six points behind the playoff places with 12 points left at stake. Despite their lower league position, they were able to dominate the game and won with a penalty converted by their captain Christian Marrugo.

Dario Herrara chose to rotate Atlético Nacional’s team due to a busy period of matches. The decision could have proved costly but due to losses for their rivals, it meant they didn’t lose their position at the top.
