John Terry was sent off but Chelsea held on to beat West Brom 3-2 at The Hawthorns on Sunday and record their first win of the new Premier League season.

Following a draw and a defeat in their first two Premier League fixtures, last season’s champions finally recorded their first victory of the current campaign in an exciting game.

Debutant Pedro, signed last week from Barcelona, took just 20 minutes to get his first goal for his new club, linking well with Eden Hazard to score with a shot into the bottom corner beating Albion goalkeeper Boaz Myhill.

That goal came just after the home side had an excellent chance to go ahead themselves, James Morrison seeing his penalty saved by Chelsea keeper Thibaut Courtois, who was back in the side after suspension.

The visitors made West Brom pay for that miss and Pedro’s strike was followed 10 minutes later by Diego Costa’s first goal of the new season. Pedro was again involved, shooting across goal with Costa providing the final touch to guide the ball into the net.

Albion pulled a goal back five minutes later, Morrison making amends for his penalty miss, but Chelsea restored their two-goal cushion before half-time, with Cesar Azpilicueta scoring his first goal for the club.

The visitors were forced to play for the final 35 minutes with 10 men after Terry was sent off when he was beaten for pace by Albion’s new signing Salomon Rondon and brought him down just outside the penalty area.

Chelsea brought Gary Cahill on to take Terry’s place at the centre of defence but West Brom scored soon afterwards, with Morrison getting his second of the game.

That gave the home side plenty of time to take advantage of having the extra man, but, though they had chances, Chelsea were able to hold on and secure victory.
