MCG showdown for Brazil and Argentina

Talks are underway between Brazil and Argentina to play their final World Cup Qualification game at Australia’s most famous stadium the Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG).

With both sides having qualified for the World Cup there has been a recognition that the final qualifying game that the two sides need to play could be played outside of South America in an attempt to publicise the famous rivalry further.

The World Cup qualification process in South America has been completed with just this one fixture to be played. The original fixture which was due to take place last year was memorably cancelled when the Brazilian police force stormed the pitch mid-game to question the Argentinian Premier League trio of Emi Martinez, Giovanni Lo Celso and Cristian Romero. With the original game still being played at the height of the COVID Pandemic, it had emerged that the three had used false documentation to enter Brazil illegally.

Despite Brazil’s protestations that they should be awarded the three points, it now seems likely that the game will be rescheduled on foreign soil.

The MCG has hosted the famous fixture before and can house up to 100,000 fans making it a great place to host a game of this magnitude.
