Chile calls for FIFA investigation over ineligible Ecuador player

Chile calls for FIFA investigation

Chile have shocked the rest of South America by demanding that FIFA investigate Ecuador over their fielding of Byron Castillo in their recently completed World Cup qualifying matches.

Chile have accused Ecuador of falsifying Castillo’s age and also his place of birth. According to reports – the Chilean Football Federation believes that Castillo was in fact born in Colombia and wasn’t born in 1998, but actually in 1995.

The Chilean FA goes on to say that the Ecuadorian FA knew about all of this but created false documents in order to register Castillo for the national side.

Chile have asked that Ecuador be docked all their points from the eight qualifying matches that Castillo featured in, and in turn, each of their opponents be awarded three points. If this wish were to be granted, Chile, who finished 7th in the South American table would be promoted up to 4th place and potentially be awarded a spot in the finals.

It remains to be seen whether Chile’s claims will have any weight behind them.

With the draw already taken place, Ecuador is actually due to compete in the opening match of the tournament when they take on hosts Qatar. They are also slated to play the Netherlands and Senegal.
