Preview:
Russia will try to bring home a medal in the FIVB World Grand Prix when it concludes the Final Round against Japan in Omaha tonight.
Russia’s title bid in Omaha ended after tasting back-to-back defeats to the United States and China.
Now the aim for Yury Marichev’s wards is to bring home either a silver or bronze medal in the elite competition. Russia is currently tied with China, Brazil and Italy with 2-2 records. The Chinese, however, have seven points compared to only six for the Brazilians and Russians. The Italians have four points but can still overtake the other squads depending on the outcome of the final matches.
Nataliya Goncharova will again lead Russia’s attacks after scoring 20 points in their 25-27 20-25 19-25 defeat to the Chinese yesterday. Yana Shcherban and Ekaterina Lyubushkina are the other key players in the squad.
Japan, meanwhile, is no longer in contention for any medal. The Asian side dropped to 0-4 but earned a point after losing to Italy 25-20 20-25 30-28 24-26 22-24 in a marathon duel yesterday.
Saori Sakoda led the Japanese with 27 points while Yurie Nabeya and Mami Uchiseto had 24 and 17, respectively. Top guns Sarina Koga and Miyu Nagaoka did not play while Saori Kimura and Yuki Ishii saw limited action.
