There was a Cuban clean sweep in Varadero this past weekend.

On Sunday, Cuban squads captured gold medals in both the men’s and women’s fields at the NORCECA Varadero Beach Volleyball Tournament. On the men’s side, Miguel Ayón and Yosvani Carrasco defeated American players Travis Mewhirter and Timothy Brewster in the final match, and it wasn’t even close. The Cuban duo dominated the Americans 21-13, 21-17. This is the second straight Cuban victory in a NORCECA tournament men’s field. Last month, Cubans Jorge Luis Alayo and Noslen Díaz won gold at Aguascalientes, Mexico.

Things were a bit closer in the women’s final, which saw Leila Martinez and Lidy Echeverría squaring off against Emma Glagau and Ruby Sorra of Canada. The Canadians held tight throughout the 48-minute duel, though Martinez and Echeverría ultimately squeaked out the win 21-12, 19-21, 15-12.

The next NORCECA tour event will be held at La Paz, Mexico, and will run from May 12-16. Volleyball fans can catch updated results and standings on the NORCECA tour website.
