They nearly pulled it off!

On Sunday, homegrown duo Juan Virgen and Miguel Sarabia of Mexico fell to Americans Cory Evans and William Kolinske in the La Paz Beach Volleyball Tournament finals.

After defeating Puerto Ricans Kevin Gutierrez and Josue Rivera in the semi-finals, Virgen and Sarabia looked poised to capture gold, but it wasn’t meant to be. In two straight, closely contested sets, the Mexican duo fell to the Americans 21-19, 21-17. Gutierrez and Rivera defeated Canadians Jake Macneil and Alex Russell 21-15, 21-18 to claim the bronze medal.

The La Paz Beach Volleyball Tournament was the third stop of the NORCECA tour. The United States currently ranks first in the tour standings with 560 points. Mexico is a close second with 500 points, and Puerto Rico ranks at the top three with 410 points.

The tour will take a two-month break before recommencing in Belize on July 22nd.
