Guarulhos Create History

Guarulhos recently beat Sao Paulo to qualify for the national championship playoff semi-final for the first time in the club’s history.

Before the third game of the quarter-final series between Sao Paulo and Guarulhos, it was evident that whichever team advanced to the semi-finals would make history for the club since both would qualify for the Top-4 for the first time.

In a great match between No. 4 Guarulhos and No. 5 Blumenau, Guarulhos emerged victorious in a deciding set tie break (20:25, 25:23, 16:25, 25:20, 15:10). The game swung back and forth numerous times, with Guarulhos coming from behind twice to win. Franco Paese, the Superliga’s leading scorer, was named MVP with 26 points, while Renato Russomano had an Oscar-worthy supporting role.

Guarulhos’ best player Franco took the game by the scruff of the neck in the fifth and final set. He took command of the team right away, and they quickly built a 6-3 lead. The hosts took advantage of the lead, played on the counter-attack, and maintained their three-point lead to 11-8. Sao Paulo was forced to take some risks, which Guarulhos took advantage of to win the last set and tie 15 to 10.
